The legal sale of cannabis in Illinois will provide Peoria Public Schools with $858,669 to rebuild Peoria's south end. Unlike illegal drugs, taxed cannabis products are channeled into helping the neighborhood.
The inequality, hardship, and suffering in our lives are seen every day and are so enormous and widespread for many, many students and their families. The list could go on and on, and the horror and violence are affecting our community, reinforcing the need for divestment identified by the United Nations, the US Department of Education, our states and local governments, and many others.
The legislation, which legalized the sale of cannabis last spring, provided for 25% of the cannabis revenue to be distributed to communities hit by destructive policing when cannabis was illegal. The plan is called R3, an abbreviation for Restore, Reinvest and Renew.
